A single-use virtual card is an online credit card sent to your vendor in an email, no physical card is present. It’s a popular delivery method for accounts payable solutions like Bill Pay.
A single-use virtual card is authorized and settled like any other credit card payment that's processed in a point-of-sale (POS) terminal, and carries a processing fee.
IMPORTANT: To process the single-use virtual card your vendor must have a point-of-sale (POS) terminal.
Why sending a single-use virtual card is a secure way for your vendor to receive payment:
- It doesn’t require them to share their personal bank account details.
- It features a unique 16-digit digital card number.
- It features a 3-digit CVV code.
- It’s issued for the exact amount to pay a single supplier invoice.
- It can only be used once.
- It has a 30-day expiration date.
How much do they cost to send?
Single-use virtual card’s are free to send in Bill Pay and you can still use the payment method that you prefer. The delivery time depends on the type of payment method. For example, paying via bank account takes 3 full days to process, while paying via card takes one day to process. The single-use virtual card will then be emailed immediately.
What if my vendor doesn't want a single-use virtual card?
Once you schedule a payment, your vendor is emailed with the delivery date of the single-use card. They can then choose to accept their payment by ACH or paper check instead.
When they receive the email with the card, they’ll have another chance to change the delivery method to ACH only.
What happens if my vendor doesn’t process the single-use virtual card before the expiration date?
The card expires 30 days from the issue date. We’ll send your vendor a reminder email 20 days after the single-use virtual card was sent, then again 2 days before it expires.
If your vendor doesn’t process the card within 30 days, the payment will fail. You can easily reschedule the payment by sending another single-use virtual card, or changing delivery method to ACH or paper check.
